A bilingual class
Written by Zita Képes
I have been a member of a bilingual class, consisting of 17 pupils, for 2 years.
During these 2 years we have learned History and Information Technology in English
and we have had lessons with a native teacher as well. Furthermore, this year we have
also studied Biology in the target language.
Our English teachers are well-qualified and experienced. Our previous English teacher, called
Judit Kövi, was a great expert. She taught us several important phrases as well as expressions
from the book, named Enterprise 4, that can be useful later in our studies or work.
In addition to this, she always explained thoroughly the grammatical rules.
What is more, she not only taught from the book but she also brought us extra
material such as grammar, reading and listening exercises for practising.
Besides this, she had creative ideas concerning verbal exercises in order
to improve our speaking skills. By this I mean that we had to do presentations about
countries and English holidays. Unfortunately, she was our teacher only for one and a
half year since she became pregnant.
To go on with the details of the subjects in English,
I have to mention that at the beginning it was not easy to get accustomed to learning
History, Information technology and Biology in a foreign language. Despite the fact
that during the first semester we had to learn a lot of technical terms which made
studying more difficult and we had to get used to the teaching method of our teachers,
now it is almost natural to learn subjects in English. In my opinion, our teachers try
to make their lessons exciting and enjoyable. For example, our Biology teacher, Tímea
Fóris, always shows us pictures about the animals and the creatures that she is speaking about.
Our History teacher, Márta Takács, often reads sources in order to help us understand what we learn.
As for the Information technology lessons, held by Tamás Szamosfalvy, I think we have already
practised a lot the most important things such as Word, Excel etc. During these lessons we did
maturity exercises.
Last but not least, I would like to write about our native teacher,
Miss Rajah. During her lessons she provides us with the opportunity to develop both our
speaking and writing skills. Many times we discussed everyday issues like global warming
and crimes. We even had some small debates on these current topics.
All points considered, I think that the level of education in this class is very high.
As a result, lots of pupils in our class have medium level degree in English and one of
my friends and I have managed to pass the advanced language examination thanks to our teachers.
I feel that during these 2 years we have had several possibilities to develop our English knowledge.
